The demand for tea is increasing throughout the world particularly in health conscious Western countries.
However because most of the increased demand relates to tea bags and tea based drinks, a big proportion of tea so consumed will not be of the best quality.
While tea bags produced by reputable companies are of acceptable quality there are many brands which cater to lower cost demands from supermarkets and catering companies, resulting in inferior tea being consumed.
Tea based drinks marketed as an alternative to popular carbonated drinks and which claim health benefits, have only a small quantity of tea in them (some as low as 1%). They use a liquid tea extract so premium quality tea is generally not used in this process.
Due to changes in climatic conditions, stricter regulations in some leading tea producing countries and rising labour and energy costs the better quality teas will become more costly.
But consumers who have an interest in tea and who demand a quality beverage need not be dismayed. They will find that the this cost increase when calculated on a cost per serving basis will be minimal, although the better quality teas will be more difficult to source unless they buy their teas from specialist tea companies.
The demand for herbal infusions which are being driven by health conscious consumers continues to be strong.
Packaging to ensure freshness as well as food security and environmental issues will also come under increased consumer scrutiny due to global demands for less disposable waste and the need for recycling.
Finally have no doubt that this varied and mystical beverage will be enjoyed around the world for many centuries to come!
