Tisanes or herbal infusions, as distinct from tea created from the plant Camelia Sinensis, are becoming increasingly popular. They have remedial and therapeutic qualities and demand is largely driven by health conscious young women.
Aromatic herbs, plants, flowers, berries, roots and bark are blended to create healthy caffeine free, delicious and relaxing beverages – usually with very pleasing aromas.
Healing herbal infusions were used in many ancient cultures to detox, cleanse, calm and relax. They were also used as an aid to sleep as well as for medicinal purposes.
Well known and reputable export companies specialising in tisanes are found in Europe, particularly Germany. Care must be taken to buy fresh and well packaged products from established companies as herbal infusions are prone to spoilage and contamination, so be prepared to pay a little bit more for quality.
There are too many ingredients to name here but many of the blends may contain Camomile, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Ginger, Hibiscus, Elderberry, Rooibos, Rosehip…. the list goes on.
Tisanes can be taken hot or cold and enjoyed throughout the year. They are a great alternative to other drinks and beverages.
